The New Year is just around the corner and if you are thinking about the future, returning to work or changing career our Teaching Assistant Course could be just what you are looking for!

If working with children is your dream job this course will give you the skills and qualification you need. The course starts in January and we are enrolling from Wednesday 2nd January 2013 at our Willesden Campus.

The role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) is to help the teacher in the classroom support individuals or groups of children. It’s a varied role and requires knowledge and skills to understand how children learn and develop. If you are considering working with children or currently have experience of raising a family, volunteering at a school or playgroup, this course can lead to a qualification employers look for and value in people who are looking for work in the primary school sector.

There is no experience required to join the course but you will need to have a good standard of English and Maths. If you are unsure about your current levels, drop in and take an assessment at our Willesden Campus. If you have been away from education for some time and want to return to learning but feel unsure our Course Advisor will be happy to listen and guide you.

For National Dementia Awareness Week, public figures from Gok Wan to the Prime Minister joined forces to highlight the annual awareness campaign. The campaign advocates how there's more to a person than the simply having dementia, and is designed by the Alzheimer’s Society to increase general understanding.

Since demand for people working in Dementia and other Health Care professions is rising, the College of North West London (CNWL) is delighted to announce we are expanding our Health & Social Care courses in order to meet the demands of this industry now and in the future.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in Health and Social Care, now is the time to join and give yourself every opportunity to join a profession in demand! The new courses include:

Dementia Care Certificate Level 2

This is a specialist qualification for adults, which is designed to provide a greater understanding of dementia, and how to provide positive and practical care for people with dementia and their families. You will need some experience of working in a health and social care setting and have at least, a Level 1 qualification. If you are currently a Health Care Assistant, or you are supporting people in their homes, this qualification will help you to improve your skills in caring for the elderly.

Health & Social Care – Entry 3

This course is ideal for adults and young learners (16-18 yrs old) and requires no experience to join! You will have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised Health & Social Care qualification, whilst improving your English speaking, reading and writing skills. The course will cover Health & Social Care units, such as health and nutrition, play and learning for children and child development as well as giving you the skills for personal career development. You will also study numeracy and IT. This is a great stepping stone to take you to the next level of study, and will enable you to build up your confidence and improve your employability skills.

Teaching Assistant Certificate Level 2

This Teaching Assistant’s course provides further training for adults with relevant teaching experience and a Level 1 qualification. Whether you're looking to move on to the next level of study or start a career in the teaching industry, this will equip you with the skills required to support teachers and pupils in the classroom. You will study a range of subjects such as children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships.

On Saturday 19th May, we are hosting our first Enrolment Open Day in preparation for September 2012! Enrolment day is the perfect opportunity to secure a place on a course! CNWL is an experienced Training Provider, with excellent facilities, dedicated teachers and positive links with industry. We are constantly striving to improve our courses and ensure we equip our students with the most up to date technical skills. Therefore our new courses are designed specifically to meet the needs of industries where growth in jobs is projected. If you haven’t applied before this date you can just drop in on the day. Just remember to come prepared and early (we are open from 9am – 2pm)! On the day you will be required to take an online assessment of your English and maths skills and a vocational assessment (if required) before you see the tutor. CNWL offers the skills and training to get you back to work!

Did you know that the College of North West London (CNWL) works in partnership with the JCP (Job Centre Plus) in Brent to get people back in to work?

A new article published in the Harrow Observer reveals that 2,215 young people in Brent aged 16-24 are not in education or training (Neets). The numbers have risen since 2010 and are higher in Brent than in most of the surrounding areas, like Harrow or Camden.

The report also shows that a lot of people are graduating from their studies and trying to get a job, but are finding it really difficult and are becoming disillusioned by the situation. See the article here.

If you, like many young people have joined Job Centre Plus and you receive Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support, you may be eligible to join the course we run at the College of North West London. To see if you qualify, you will need to be referred by your JCP Advisor. So the next time you are there, ask for details about our 10 week courses...

The programmes are designed to get people on benefits back in to work by providing you with work-related skills, such as CV writing and interview skills and techniques. The courses on offer are Retail, ESOL, IT, Care and Hospitality which all last 10 weeks.

Once you have been successfully referred, you will be able to attend assessment days at the College, which is part of the enrolment process. When enrolled, you will have the opportunity to attend the JCP course, which runs over 10 weeks. You will be supported by our Project Administrator, Rowena Johnson.

After completing the course, you will be given an accredited certification.

Support is also provided by our Job Brokerage Team to help get you to work, based on the certification you have just achieved. In addition, the team helps by posting jobs on the college jobs board where you can apply for jobs.

CNWL launches new course in Social Care!

From January we are launching a new course in Social Care. The course covers the skills and knowledge you will need to work in the Social Care and Child Care fields. It has been introduced to allow students who are unsure of which path to choose, the chance to sample both areas before committing to a specific career path.

You do not need any experience to join this course, as you will cover at college all the skills and theory necessary to work in this very worthwhile and rewarding industry.

If you are currently employed or volunteering and would like to develop your existing skills more, this course will allow you to achieve a recognised qualification, and help to improve your job prospects.

Health and Social Care and Childcare workers are extremely vital to society, as they look after the well being of both the young and the elderly. There are almost six million carers in the UK - that is one in 10 people.

The need for carers is increasing as the UK population is rapidly ageing. This means that we now have more elderly people than ever and that one in four UK adults will soon be pensioners.

This highlights how the need for people to train and work as carers will, in turn, increase rapidly in the future. It is expected that within the next 30 years, the number of carers will increase by 3.4 million (around 60%).

To work in this growing field, you will need to gain a wide range of skills and knowledge to help you understand how people grow and develop physically, and learn about a wide range of illnesses and treatments. You will also need to understand the importance of nutrition, unusual diets and the impact nutrition has on illnesses such as diabetes.

To working or volunteers in this sector, you will be required to understand the law and your role in ensuring people are not discriminated against or abused. You will also learn how to run a wide range of social activities, to help ensure those in your care are enjoying and participating in recreational activities.

What’s more, working in Social Care /Childcare offers you the opportunity to have a flexible working life, and the opportunity to pursue a management role or run your own business.

FREE help with ENGLISH and MATHS!

Still making your list of New Year’s Resolutions? We are enrolling now for January. This week we are highlighting a FREE course in English and Maths. Why not add this to the top of your list!

Did you know that one in six people in the UK struggle with reading? This means their reading is below the level expected of an eleven year old. Recent exams taken by 16-year-olds have also reveal thousands struggle to grasp even basic English and maths.

For some of you, the mere mention of the word MATHS may have frightened you at school, so don’t feel like you are the only one!

Every year, hundreds of adults and young people join us to improve their English and maths skills. These skills are so useful to help you budget for your weekly shop, help your kids with their homework, apply for a new job, or get back into work.

Many of you may not realise there is such a big link between reading, success and full-time employment.

So...why not grab this opportunity for a second chance to gain the confidence and skills you need, and update your CV.

We can help find a course to suit you, by offering FREE maths and English classes ranging from entry level through to level 2, which is equivalent to GCSE. These courses will give you the skills to move on to other vocational courses, and give you the courage to achieve what you want!

We offer a range of classes from January at our Willesden centre. To help us fit in with your lives, the courses run in the morning, afternoon and evening, and last for 18 weeks.

Mary Morris, a CNWL student started her own ‘journey’ by completing the Essential Skills Maths and English course. Although she was nervous about the course, she soon built up her confidence and found that her tutors were really helpful and made her feel at home.
